CAR HIRE

There is a wide choice of car hire available. You may be tempted to book direct with one of the companies in the U.S., because it appears to be cheaper. In almost all cases, it is not. You will get a shock at your arrival airport when you are asked to pay all of the compulsory additions - these are rarely advertised and can double the price of your car hire.

Most cars in the U.S. have much smaller boots (trunks=American) than in Europe. You will need to consider this if you are taking a lot of luggage. Even many of the "full size" cars have small boots.

Almost all cars are automatics. They are easy to drive, but may take some getting used to, if you normally drive a car with a manual gearbox.

When filling your car up with petrol (gas), make sure the petrol station accepts credit cards if you expect to pay by this method. Not all petrol stations accept them. To start the pump, lift up the lever that the nozzle rests on - you would not believe how many people just stand at look at the pump and wonder why it doesn't work! Americans take this lever thing for granted, so it does not normally show you this in any instructions. Some petrol stations are pre-pay. You have to go to the shop, pay for a certain amount of petrol, and then the pump is activated. This is normally shown by a sign, "pre-pay" only.
